The attached file is a copy of The South Pacific Post. 1954. “A Yank in the Territory.” The South Pacific Post, June 16, 1954, p. 5.
Ralph Craib, a reporter for the Oakland Tribune, visited the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. Due to travel restrictions he could not join any patrols, which were widely covered in the international and Australian media at the time. He instead read patrol reports in the administration's public information office for his own reporting. Indeed, the public information office issued a number of news releases to the media to trumpet the success of its penetration into the New Guinea interior, fueling the buzz for stories about “first contact.”
